VIII--Regulations and Procedures

Dropping Courses

All course drops from a student's program for a particular semester are to be completed by the end of the fortieth class day. The dropping of a course after the fortieth class day is allowed only in exceptional circumstances and requires the approval of the program counsellor of the program in which the student is registered. Instructor notification may also be required (see below).

Double-Weighted Courses

When a student drops a double-weighted course, both parts of the course must be dropped. These courses can not be split.

Instructor Notification

A signature is required to drop a course if it is specified by the instructor on the course outline. Instructors will bring this to the attention of the class during the academic orientation period. Departments must advise the Assistant Registrar, Academic Records, in writing prior to the start of classes, of those courses that require students to notify the instructor when dropping the course. The instructor notification procedure may apply to limited enrolment courses and regular courses.

Limited Enrolment Courses

Limited enrolment courses may be dropped during the add period following registration upon notification of the instructor or the department's delegate for that course. From the end of the add period to the fortieth class day instructor notification may be required (see below).

Regular Courses

Regular courses may be dropped from the start of the add period to the fortieth class day without approval except where instructor notification is required (see Instructor Notification above).

Two-Semester Courses

When dropping two-semester courses, both semesters of the course must be dropped. Students who wish to re-take a two-semester course must re-take both parts of the course. The drop deadline for a two-semester course is the deadline date specified for the second semester of the course.

Deadline Dates

In all cases, if course changes are made, the "Undergraduate Course Request" form with appropriate approvals must be returned to the Academic Records Section, Office of the Registrar, within the first forty class days. Refer to Section VI--Schedule of Fees for the refund schedule.

The specific deadline date for dropping courses (i.e., the fortieth class day) is noted in Section III--Schedule of Dates.

Refunds

A refund may be given for courses dropped between the first class day and the thirtieth class day. Drops between the thirty-first class day and the fortieth class day do not carry any fee refund value. (See Section VI--Schedule of Fees for refund schedule.) Normally, changes to the effective date of dropped courses are only allowed for documented medical or compassionate reasons and require the approval of the program counsellor.
