X--Degree Programs
Department of Languages and Literatures, College of Arts.
All language courses carry full credit. However, students with Year 4 or OAC Italian or their equivalent may be admitted into 57-106or 57-107only with the approval of the department. Students advancing in a Romance language (French, Spanish, Italian) are advised to take elective courses in a second Romance language and in Latin. All language students are strongly advised to include 24-100and 62-100among their electives in order to derive the maximum benefit from their studies. Except where stated otherwise, literary texts are, at all levels, studied in the original language. Students registering in these courses will be expected to have the appropriate knowledge.
Italian may be taken as an area of concentration in the general program or as a minor in the honours program. Students in Italian will be counselled by the Department of Languages and Literatures.
The Department of Languages and Literatures encourages students in modern languages to spend 1 or 2 semesters in another country to study a particular language at the university level. Credit for programs of study successfully completed may be applied towards the University of Guelph degree requirements. Requests should be addressed well in advance to either the department or a particular section of the department. A letter of permission is required (see Section VIII, Undergraduate Degree Regulations & Procedures.)
