Interdisciplinary Program

The International Development program is intended to provide students with an opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary and comparative studies on the problems of modernization, change and development.
A broad coverage of the process of international development, from the perspectives of history and social science, forms the basis for more in-depth study on such topics as economic growth, biophysical environment and development, women in the development process, rural and agricultural development, and political development and administrative change.
The primary participating departments are Economics, Geography, Political Studies, and Sociology and Anthropology.
A minimum of 26 courses is required:
Fifteen core courses and one of five areas of emphasis (11 courses): Economic Growth and Development, Women in the Development Process, Rural and Agricultural Development, Biophysical Environment and Development, and Political Development and Administrative Change. With the permission of the International Studies Undergraduate Committee, students may replace a course required for 1 of the areas of emphasis with85-320 Individual Work/Study in International Development.
*Students choosing the Economic Growth and Development area of emphasis must take 36-274
**Students must complete this course before semester 5.
*** Students taking these courses must be able to read Spanish or French.
*With the approval of the coordinator, students may replace this with an independent study or reading course on an appropriate topic from any department of the Colleges of Arts or Social Science, or from OAC.
With the approval of the CIDS undergraduate advisor, students may replace a restricted elective with 85-320 Individual Work/Study in International Development.
