X--Degree Programs
Department of Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences and Department of Biomedical Sciences.
Coordinator: G. Partlow, O.V.C., Rm. 1685
With or without an Area of Emphasis
This joint program of the Department of Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences and the Department of Biomedical Sciences focuses on the maintenance and promotion of human and animal health through the study of function (biochemistry and physiology), structure (anatomy and histology), and the basic medical sciences (epidemiology and pharmacology). It will permit graduates from this B.Sc. program to contribute to society in the area of health maintenance. It is also designed so that students can proceed to programs of professional preparation for medicine, dentistry and associated fields. Additionally, the program is a good preparation for students intending to develop research careers in the medical and biological sciences.
Admission to this specialization in semester 3 normally requires completion of the 8 required courses in semesters 1 and 2 and a 70% average in the best 6 courses of the 8 in semester 1 and 2 and the signature of the coordinator.
Admission to the specialization beyond semester 3 requires 2 consecutive semesters with better than 70% average and the signature of the coordinator.
Students who are lacking in the fundamentals of word processing, spread sheet use and data management should arrange to complete 27-100 as early in their program as possible.
This program is designed to meet the current requirements for an entry into medical schools in Ontario, (a student interested in meeting these requirements should check the present admission requirements for the medical schools); as well as entry into the Pre-Veterinary year of the DVM program of the Ontario Veterinary College.
See admission statement above.
A total of 4 Arts and Social Science courses including 1 philosophy and ethics and 1 in either psychology or sociology must be completed. At least six 400 level courses must be completed.
Students are required to complete 3 courses of independent study from either the Department of Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences (75-423 Advanced Study in Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences, and either 75-4361:2 Research in Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences, or 75-4371/2 Research in Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences) or the Department of Biomedical Sciences (98-450Research in biomedical Sciences I, and either 98-4511:2 Research in Biomedical Sciences II, or 98-4521Research in Biomedical Sciences II).
Students may elect 1 of the following areas of emphasis in the basic sciences involved in health: Nutritional Sciences, Principles of Health and Disease Prevention, or Reproductive Biology. A minimum of 6 courses from 1 area is required to have an area of emphasis. Students who do not elect an area of emphasis are in a position to construct their own combination of the courses listed, for example, one directed at preparation of basic research in the medical and biological sciences. Other suitable courses may be substituted may be substituted for those listed our the approval of the coordinator.
