X--Degree Programs
Department of Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences, College of Biological Science.
Coordinator: Dr. J.K. Barclay, Powell Rm. 107.
Human Kinetics is the study of biology and is concerned with understanding capacities for, and limits of, human movement in a variety of laboratory and real life-settings.
Admission to this specialization in semester 3 normally requires completion of the 8 required courses in semester 1 and 2 and a 70% average in the best 6 courses of the 8 required courses in semester 1 and 2. Admission to the specialization beyond semester 3 requires 2 consecutive semesters with better than 70% average. Students declaring this specialization require the signature of the coordinator. Students are advised that normally these and OAC biology, chemistry and physics requirements must be completed prior to admission.
If lacking the fundamentals of word processing, spread sheet use and data management, the student should elect 27-120 as early in the program as possible.
See admission statement above.
Students must take 4 Arts or Social Science courses. It is recommended that 1 of the 4 courses be in philosophy. A minimum of 4 Human Biology (i.e.75-XXX) restricted electives at the 300 or 400 level are required. A minimum of six 400 level courses must be selected.
Students may choose to complete their program without an area of emphasis or they may elect to focus their program on one of the listed areas. If Biomechanics and Ergonomics, Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, or Population Biology is chosen, the student must select at least 6 courses from list of applicable courses. Students choosing Sports Injury Management must follow the schedule of studies for the area of emphasis.
*Interested students should schedule *75-208as soon as possible.
(This area of emphasis will not be offered during the 1996-97 calendar year.)
This is a collaborative effort between the Sheridan College of Applied Arts and Technology 3-year diploma program in Sports Injury Management and the University of Guelph B.Sc. Specialized Honours Human Kinetics program. Semester 2 B.Sc. students may be selected for joint admission and concurrent registration over the next 4-year period to the Human Kinetics specialization in this area of emphasis and the Sheridan College Sports Injury Management program. Upon successful completion, students will earn both a University of Guelph B.Sc. degree and a Sheridan College diploma. See the departmental advisor for details.
Four courses must be chosen from the Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism Area of Emphasis.
*These courses are taught at Sheridan College and the course descriptions appear in the Sheridan College calendar.
