Canadian Studies

Interdisciplinary Program

The Canadian Studies program offers students the opportunity to pursue an interdisciplinary program of studies involving a mix of core courses in Canadian Studies as well as a range of departmental courses with substantial Canadian content. Core courses in Canadian Studies at the 200 level and 300 level introduce and orient students to Canadian Studies as a field of studies and carry the program through to a 400 level capstone course in which students conduct and present individual research projects.

Departmental courses in the College of Arts and the College of Social Science have been grouped into four areas of emphasis: Economy, Geography and Society; History, Politics and Philosophy; Literature and the Arts; and Public Policy and Administration.

Teaching of core courses will be based upon joint involvement of faculty from Arts and Social Sciences and the overall program is administered by a coordinator and the Advisory Committee on Canadian Studies.

Students may pursue either a major in Canadian Studies, requiring completion of a minimum of 22 courses, including one of the 4 areas of emphasis listed, or a minor in Canadian Studies, requiring completion of at least 12 courses.

Honours Program Major

A minimum of 22 courses is required, including:

1. The core, plus 18 additional courses including:
2. A minimum of 9 from one area of emphasis
3. A minimum of 2 from each of the other 3 areas of emphasis
4. At least 2 of these additional courses must be at the 400 level
5. At least 6 must be from each of the College of Arts and the College of Social Science
