Genome Canada

2017 Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Competition

For More Information

Please visit the Ontario Genomics website for more information.

This funding opportunity is aimed at supporting research projects that address any aspect of bioinformatics and computational biology (B/CB) as it relates to genomics (and other high throughput ‘omics technologies) across all of Genome Canada’s sectors, i.e., human health, agriculture, aquaculture/fisheries, forestry, energy, mining and environment. While the details are still being finalized, we wanted to alert you to this funding opportunity and invite you to contact Ontario Genomics to discuss potential projects and learn more about the competition, process and timeline.

Competition Objectives:

  1. To support the development of next generation B/CB tools and methodologies needed to manage, analyze and integrate complex data sets produced by modern genomics technologies to better understand the associated biology; and,

  2. To provide broad and timely access of these B/CB tools to the research community.

Proposal Focus Areas:

  • Stream 1: proposals mainly impacting the human health sector

  • Stream 2: proposals mainly impacting one or more of the other sectors, i.e., agriculture, aquaculture/fisheries, forestry, energy, mining and/or environment

To be eligible, proposals must:

  • respond to the objectives of the competition,
  • be applicable to at least one of the two streams described above; and
  • ensure that the essential components and deliverables of the project will be realized by the end of the project and will apply directly to the genomics research community.

$500K - $1M per project (total)

Co-funding: 50% from Genome Canada + 50% from other eligible sources

Indirect Costs

Project Duration

Up to three years

Special Notes

If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.

External Deadline

Final Registration deadline to Ontario Genomics (email khunter@ontariogenomics.ca to confirm, as dates have historically been subject to change)

Please submit a copy of your final registration package to research.services@uoguelph.ca for information purposes only (i.e. not review).

External Deadline

Final Applications due to Ontario Genomics (email khunter@ontariogenomics.ca to confirm, as dates have historically been subject to change)

You will be required to submit both an OR-5 Form and your final proposal to research.services@uoguelph.ca two weeks prior to the final application deadline to Ontario Genomics.

How to Apply

Registration Forms: The Request for Applications (RFA), Guidelines for Funding, and Registration Form have been posted on the Ontario Genomics website. All registration forms must be submitted electronically to khunter@ontariogenomics.ca by the deadline.

Researchers in Ontario intending to submit an application are strongly encouraged to contact Ontario Genomics to discuss details of the competition such as scope, application process, tips for writing the Benefits to Canada Section of the proposal and co-funding requirements.
