The Huntington Library

Description

The Huntington Library awards over 150 research fellowships annually. The Huntington is a collections-based research institute, which promotes humanities scholarship on the basis of its library holdings and art collections. The Art Collections feature European and American art spanning more than 500 years, with diverse strengths ranging from Renaissance Italian bronzes to British grand manner portrait paintings to early American folk art to 20th-century drawings, prints and photography. The Library holds more than 11 million items that span the 11th to the 21st century. Its diverse materials center on 14 intersecting collection strengths.

Eligibility

Project eligibility: Huntington fellowships support high-quality research that advances scholarship in the humanities and makes use of The Huntington’s extensive archival and rare book collections. A full list of the collection strengths can be found on the Fellowship FAQs page of The Huntington website.

The Huntington does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, gender identity, religion, national or ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation or age and is dedicated to fair treatment, diversity and inclusion. Eligible candidates may apply in collaboration with a colleague for either a joint short-term fellowship or a joint long-term fellowship.

  • Applicants for long-term (one-year or one-term) fellowships must have completed all requirements for the PhD at the time of application. That is to say, only those who hold a PhD or who have successfully defended a dissertation by the application deadline are eligible. NOTE: This year we are accepting long-term fellowship applications for one term of support as well as for one year of support. These fellowships are designed to provide applicants with the time to research and write, and carry a set stipend as opposed to a monthly stipend. While the length of academic terms can vary by institution, for our purposes we consider one term to be 4-5 months and one year to be 9-11 months.

  • Short-term fellowships (one to three months) are open to graduate students, faculty members, postdoctoral scholars, working artists, creative writers and independent researchers working on a scholarly project served by our collections. Projects should be research based in The Huntington’s collections. Fellows are expected to spend the majority of their time in residence working with special collections in the reading rooms.

  • Travel grants/exchange fellowships (for study abroad) are open to North American-based doctoral candidates who have advanced to candidacy (ABD) at the time of the application deadline, to faculty members and other postdoctoral scholars.

  • Variable-term fellowships -
    • Trinity Hall, Cambridge in the History of British Art (two to ten months): provides early career scholars and museum professionals with a 2- to 10-month residential fellowship, divided between The Huntington and Trinity Hall, Cambridge to support research in the history of British Art, understood here to extend to the traditions of visual culture not only in the United Kingdom but also in the contexts of the British Empire, Commonwealth and post-Commonwealth nations. Fellows must spend at least one month in residence at each institution and may apply for up to 10 months total. This fellowship is open to faculty members and post-doctoral scholars who are within 10 years of receiving their PhD and curators with the appropriate equivalent level of professional experience.
    • Center for East Asian Garden Studies at The Huntington (three to twelve months): fellows will spend three to twelve months in residence at The Huntington, where they will engage in research and participate in public programs. This fellowship is open to scholars at any stage of their career from ABD onwards.

The majority of Huntington fellowships—short- and long-term—are open to scholars of any nationality. Exceptions include the three long-term fellowships funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, which require recipients be either U.S. citizens or foreign nationals who have been in the United States for three years preceding application. Applicants for travel grants and exchange fellowships must be based at institutions in North America but do not need to be U.S. citizens.
