The objectives of the IC-IMPACTS Innovation Demonstration Initiative (IDI) are to:
- Encourage the transfer of technology and knowledge resulting from India-Canada research and technology development partnerships;
- Improve Canada-India economic ties;
- Foster Canada-India collaborative research and trade development activities;
- Provide deployment opportunities for existing research;
- Demonstrate the effectiveness of innovative technologies for the Canadian and Indian marketplace; and, most importantly,
- Improve the health, safety, and prosperity of communities through the introduction of new technologies in Canada and/or India.
Types of Eligible Projects
IC-IMPACTS is seeking project proposals in three categories of projects in the deployment-ready stage of development related to IC-IMPACTS themes on safe and sustainable infrastructure, integrated water management and public health and disease prevention:
- Technology Indigenization or Product Adaptation [i.e. proven technology being adapted to meet country-specific regulations or standards, different market price-points, unique community requirements (eg. different water conditions, dispersed population, different level of target audience (individual versus community or vice versa), etc.]
- Technology or Research Validation within a community context [i.e. validation of proven laboratory research into the field context, including validation of functionality, performances, quality, usability, and community uptake potential]
- Technology Replication in new community context – proof of scalability and transferability to different settings [i.e. secondary deployment of technology into a different context with new parameters to assess scalability and reliability]; symmetrical projects that take the technology into the opposite country are of particular interest (i.e. if first tested in Canada, then a deployment in India, or vice versa)
Criteria for Eligible Projects
All projects must be based on excellence in research and have the following additional elements:
- Include Canadian academic team member(s)
- Include Canadian graduate student involvement
- The application must include an industry partner which is committed to the project and can provide both in-kind and cash support. Cash support from industry must be 50% or more of their total support.
- Include commitment from a community context or testing site agreeing to the deployment of the technology
- Fit the strategic priorities of Indian or Canadian communities
- Be tailored to the market within which the technology is being deployed to ensure the potential for successful technology uptake (i.e. in terms of complexity, maintenance and price-point)
- If a project does not have a team member from India (academic, industry, community partner) the application must clearly indicate a strategy for knowledge sharing from the demonstration to Indian target audience
- Research should be in an advanced stage and deployment realistically achievable within two years.
Maximum Project Value
As the focus of this call is deployment of technologies rather than research development, most proponents submitting a demonstration project proposal are expected to submit budget requests under $25,000. Budgets are expected to consist primarily of costs related to final-stage technology refinement and adoption, and travel for deployment and testing activities. In some circumstances, where proponents of a demonstration and deployment project can clearly substantiate requiring a budget allocation higher than $25,000, this can be considered to a maximum of $45,000, Note that this level of funding will be awarded only in well justified cases and is not expected to be the norm.
Student engagement particularly in the deployment activities of the technology within the community context are required and all budgets are expected to have a substantive amount committed to this purpose. Where a demonstration project provides an opportunity to increase student participation in the execution of the deployment within community contexts, the proponents can include a request for additional student support of up to $10,000.
Industrial or other partner involvement and contribution is a requirement for all project submissions.
Projects may be of a duration of up to, but not exceeding, 24 months and may include some research for technology refinement on the basis of outcomes from technology deployment.
If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.
This call remains open and IC-IMPACTS is currently accepting applications on a rolling basis.

- Consent to Disclosure Form
- Appendix A – Acknowledgement to Network Agreement Form
- Investigator Environmental Impact Assessment Form
- Approval from their University’s Office of Research Services

If you need to meet a deadline set by the lead institution for this opportunity, please ensure that you provide the Office of Research with at least five days in advance of the lead institution’s deadline to review the application, or your proposed component of the project.
