The Green Ontario Fund is introducing measures to help producers, processors and rural communities reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, increase their resiliency, adapt to climate change and transition to a low-carbon economy.
The GreenON Food Manufacturing Program is a merit-based funding program that supports food and beverage processors.
This program funds projects under two Streams:
- Stream 1 (Retrofit) - Reduce GHG emissions through the adoption of proven technologies such as retrofits to improve energy, water and resource efficiency.
- Supports upgrades to existing technologies and the validation of the economic and environmental performance of these projects as well as GHG reduction outcomes.
- Stream 1 projects may qualify for thirty-five (35) percent of total eligible project costs up to a maximum of $500,000.
- The maximum duration of a project will be 24 months.
- Stream 2 (Innovation) - Support projects that reduce GHG emissions through the adoption and demonstration of technologies that are lesser known to the food and beverage processing sector in Ontario.
- Stream 2 projects may qualify for seventy-five (75) percent of total eligible project costs up to a maximum of $1,000,000.
- The maximum duration of a project will be 24 months.
The applicant must be a food, beverage or feed manufacturer located in Ontario, is a legal entity and meets the definition of a manufacturer under the North American Industry Classification System (NAICs code) 311 and 312.
U of G researcher will most likely be involved as a consultant or third party service provider. Please have the lead applicant discuss with their OCE Business Development Manager for clarification.
Only projects that are undertaken in Ontario food and beverage processing facilities will qualify for funding. In order to be eligible, the following must:
- Be designed to achieve measurable reductions in GHG emission; include verification of the reductions achieved using an accredited third-party expert;
- Take place in an Ontario-based facility;
- Commit to matching a specified percentage of the grant investment for the project (stacking from other non-Ontario government sources is possible);
- Applicants and any co-applicants MUST sign a Funding Agreement (subject to change) with OCE.
- Applicants and any co-applicants MUST provide project and outcomes metrics, as well as client satisfaction surveys.
- Applicants and any co-applicants MUST be in good financial and reporting standing with OCE.
- All applicants must remain in compliance with all Requirements of Law for the term of their contribution agreement with the Province of Ontario. “Requirements of Law” means all applicable requirements of law, as may be set out in statutes, regulations, by-laws, codes, rules, ordinances, official plans, approvals, permits, licences, authorizations, decrees, injunctions, orders and declarations, or any other similar requirement of law.
Maximum Project Value
Eligible businesses can access applicable funding of up to 35% of eligible project cash costs, up to $500,000 to undertake eligible Stream 1 activities.
More than one Stream 1 application can be submitted to any identified project up to the maximum of $500,000, to undertake proposed projects.
A single application may include more than one project and/ or more than one site, but the application must align with the information provided as per GHG estimations. If more than one project is being proposed as part of a single application, all of those activities must be completed to submit a complete claim.
Eligible businesses can access applicable funding of up to 75% of eligible project cash costs, up to $1,000,000 to undertake eligible Stream 2 activities. More than one Stream 2 application can be submitted to any identified project up to the maximum of $1,000,000, to undertake proposed projects.
A single application may include more than one project, but the application must align with the information provided as per GHG estimations. If more than one project is being proposed as part of a single application, all of those activities must be completed to submit a complete claim.
If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.

How to Apply
What you need to apply:
- You must meet the "Eligibility" requirements and have a facility that has been in production for at least one year.
- Have a Business Registration

- Provide the data required to develop aggregate case studies arising from the program
- Have completed the GHG estimations for the proposed facility and activity/activities proposed
- You must work with an OCE Business Development Manager in your application
Information For Co-applicants
If you need to meet a deadline set by the lead applicant for this opportunity, please ensure that you provide the Office of Research with at least five days in advance of the lead applicant's deadline to review the application, or your proposed component of the project. Please be in touch with the Office of Research (contact information below) ahead of the deadline if it looks like it will be difficult for you to submit all the required documentation on time (i.e. budget, proposal, OR-5 Form).
