Responsible AI for One Health Grants

Description

Responsible AI for One Health Grants:

  • Support the formation of interdisciplinary research collaborations that have the potential to achieve national or international recognition for research.
  • Enhance the competitiveness of new Tri-council grant applications by U of G faculty.
  • Spearhead new research initiatives through development of a prototype, feasibility study or research sprint.
  • Directly support graduate student training in a developing and rapidly growing field.
  • Projects will integrate a One Health approach, which supports optimal health for people, animals, plants and our environment, with the responsible development and application of AI.

The research and project initiatives must be led by U of G faculty but can involve internal and external collaborators. The project team should reflect the interdisciplinarity inherent to both One Health and CARE-AI. Preference will be given to proposals that will: leverage faculty expertise from more than one college, demonstrate the application of One Health principles and approaches, integrate the fields of AI and One Health, and clearly explain how the grant will contribute to enhancing competitiveness of the applicant and/or project for future submission of a specific external sponsor application (see eligible activities, below).

Eligibility

Applicants must be full-time continuing faculty members or other academic staff at U of G and be eligible to hold Tri-Agency grants. If you have any questions on the U of G’s Eligibility for Research policy, please contact the Research Office.

There will be one applicant and any number of collaborators on each application. It is intended that the grant applicant be the primary investigator.

A grant applicant may only win one award per competition (up to $18,500 per year + 0.05% benefits for up to 2 years). An individual may apply as the primary applicant for one application per competition. However, the individual can be a collaborator in other applications within a competition.

The purpose of this award is to bring together innovative combinations of individual expertise in AI and One Health. To this end, applicants may be CARE-AI Affiliated Faculty and/or have demonstrated research and/or teaching expertise in the area of One Health.

The applicant must clearly explain how the grant will enhance individual/group competitiveness for future grant applications. For instance, the provision of funds for student training opportunities provided here may assist a faculty member in enhancing their highly qualified personnel (HQP) training record to become a more competitive applicant to an external grant program (e.g. undergraduate student research assistantships).

Funding Availability

CARE-AI and OHI awards are up to $18,593 per year for up to 2 years to support a Masters-level graduate student whose research work will support this project. The student will also receive a one-time $1,000 stipend at the end of their second year, to offset travel, registration and accommodation costs to attend a scientific conference at which they will present their research (poster, talk, abstract, etc.)

Deadlines

If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.
