Simons Fellow Program – Mathematics and Theoretical Physics
The Fellows Program provides funds to faculty (teaching or administrative tenured positions at a U.S. or Canadian university) for up to a semester long research leave from classroom teaching and administrative obligations. Such leaves can increase creativity and provide intellectual stimulation. Grants awarded will be restricted to sabbatical-eligible faculty who wish to use the grant for the purpose of extending a single term sabbatical leave to a full academic year.
The program provides salary replacement of up to 50 percent of the Fellow’s current academic-year salary, up to a maximum of $100,000, and up to $25,000 for expenses related to the leave. An additional 20 percent overhead on allowable expenses will be added and the award will be administered through the Fellow’s home institution. Fellowships may begin no earlier than July 1, 2016 and the foundation support portion of the leave must be completed by August 31, 2017.
The foundation expects to award up to 40 mathematics fellowships, and up to 15 theoretical physics fellowships each year.

Targeted Grants in the Mathematical Modeling of Living Systems – Letter of Intent
The Targeted Grants in MMLS program is intended to foster a culture of theory-experiment collaboration similar to that prevailing in the physical sciences by supporting the development of mathematical models that explain classes of experimental results and suggest new directions for experiment, as well as research aimed at testing theoretical ideas and expanding their reach. This program aims to support research in the life sciences that breaks new conceptual or theoretical ground and relates closely to the experiment. Applicants must hold a faculty or equivalent position. An applicant in not eligible to hold a fellowship or investigator award for the duration of his/her Targeted Grant.
A typical Targeted Grant in MMLS is awarded up to three years, normally at a level of up to $200,000 per year. Up to four awards are expected to be funded each year.
The external deadline for Letters of Intent is: September 30, 2015 12 a.m. EST. If invited, full proposals are due on January 28, 2016 at 12 a.m. EST. Applications for LOI and full proposals are submitted through proposal CENTRAL.
Simons Collaborations in Mathematics and the Physical Sciences
The Aim of the Simons Collaborations is to stimulate progress on fundamental scientific questions of major importance in mathematics, theoretical physics, and theoretical computer science. The project should involve outstanding researchers with a range of career stages. Excellence of the scientific leadership is one of the main criteria in the selection process. The project should be organized and managed in a manner engendering a high level of collaboration. Each collaboration is led by a collaboration director, who is expected to determine the scientific agenda, to coordinate the scientific activities of the other members, to determine (in collaboration with the other members) the scientific themes, and to organize the collaboration meetings and activities as appropriate, including a one-day annual conference at the foundation. Faculty who hold a PhD are eligible.
Collaborations are budgeted at $2.5 million per year for an initial period of four years. Annual budgets can vary somewhat but as long as the total four-year budget is no more than $10 million. The foundation expects to make up to two awards in 2016.
Letters of Intent are due by October 1, 2015 at 12 a.m. EST. If invited, the full proposal is due on February 29, 2016 at 12 a.m. EST. Applications for LOI and full proposals are submitted through proposal CENTRAL
Targeted Grants to Institutes
The program is intended to support centers of excellence in the mathematics and physical sciences through funding to help establish scientific culture and strengthen contacts within the international scientific community. The aim is to enable institutes to extend and enhance their mission; the program will typically not provide primary support for operating or establishing an institute. Applications may be from established U.S. and foreign public and private institutes and stand-alone research centers. The program is not intended to support centers whose main purpose is to provide a focal point for research of faculty at a specific university.
A typical targeted grant to an institute from the foundation provides funding for three to five years at a level of $100,000 to $200,000 per year. This includes 20% indirect costs to the institution. The foundation expects to award up to three targeted grants each year. There is no limit on the number of applications per institution.
