Description
Huawei Canada is invested in working with world-class researchers in the communication technology, computer science, engineering, and other related fields.
Eligibility
Each applicant must be a full-time faculty member (lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor or full professor). Huawei will not accept applications from professors on behalf of students, post-docs, or other ineligible candidates. Joint research proposals are not accepted.
Maximum Project Value
Up to $90,000 if requesting funding only from Huawei. If you wish to leverage Huawei funding to eligible government funded research programs in Canada (e.g. NSERC) you may only apply to Huawei for a maximum of $60,000.

Huawei accepts 1-year proposals for the HIRP program. In some cases, especially outstanding proposals that last 2 years are also accepted.

HIRP program is looking for proposals in 23 research subjects across six research themes, including:
- Big Data
- Future Networks
- Media Technology
- Computing Technology
- Compression Technology
- Wireless Communication Technology

The HIRP evaluation criteria include:
- Innovation of research idea
- Feasibility of technical approach
- Value of the outcome
- Duration of the research plan

How to Apply
Proposals must be formatted according to the HIRP proposal template available online. Proposals are expected to be in English, in MS Word format only, and no longer than 10 pages. Proposal title names must include the program name, university name, and name of applicant. E.g., ‘HIRPO20140101_WATERLOO_Mike Smith’. Proposals can be submitted online at: HIRP Open .
Once the signed Or-5 is returned by the Office of Research to the researcher, the researcher is responsible for submitting the online application directly
