THE CARRYING CAPACITY FOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF A FORESTED SAND
DUNE AREA AT WASAGA BEACH, ONTARIO

Yurick, R. I. M.
Several
aspects of biophysical recreational carrying capacity were investigated on
climax and sub-climax successi onal stages of a forested sand dune area at Wasaga
Beach, Ontario. One experiment looked at the changing values of a number of site
parameters during and following foot traffic impact. The impact tolerances of
three distinct communities in an early biome, and two types of maximum usage
potential (biological and physical) were identified. Investigations in other
areas attempted to determine whether seasonality factors had any influence on
the carrying capacity; and to see if some practical management tool could be
found for enhancing the carrying capacity of a recreation site.
Two scales were devised to rank the
relative degradation potentials of various recreational land uses on this
landscape. This was done to relate the experimental results to any other use
that could be conceived for the park that is being planned in the study area.
