Managed Servers Press Release
May 5, 2010
In a recent Globe and Mail survey, students gave the University of Guelph an ‘A’ for Campus Technology; technology services were ranked first in the medium enrolment category. Maintaining the highest level of service to the campus community continues to be the first priority for Computing and Communications Services (CCS).
In addition to providing a suite of core services to support the university’s IT infrastructure such as internet connectivity, a campus wide integrated email and calendaring system, telephony infrastructure, software distribution and more. CCS recently added additional support on a cost sharing basis to assist its campus partners in meeting their objectives on schedule and on budget.
One of the most recent solutions offered by CCS on a cost sharing basis is Managed Servers. Using virtualization technology, CCS is able to satisfy three major objectives: maximum server performance; minimum impact on the environment; and a high level of affordability.
Like the University of Guelph, CCS has aligned its priorities to demonstrate commitment to sustainability through initiatives focused around resource conservation. Managed Servers reduces energy consumption as well as carbon dioxide emissions; at the same time, it maintains the highest level of security measures, user control and increased performance.
The Physics department can attest to the reliability and flexibility offered by Managed Servers. Bill Teesdale, the department IT admin, asserts that “virtual servers allow me to make changes and back out if I so please. I would definitely recommend that other departments try out Managed Servers. I fully trust CCS; they’ve allowed me to better serve the needs of my department, while being in full control over our sensitive data. You can’t get this type of reliability for a better price. I can go on a vacation without worrying.”
Virtual servers remove the dependency on physical hardware. Administrators can grow or move the virtual servers without having to worry about hardware modifications. With a wide range of operating systems offered, the servers can be tailored to the various needs of a department. The servers are located in secure rooms, behind lock and key – protection at the highest level.
