Position Description:

The Animal Biosciences department at the University of Guelph invites applications from qualified candidates for a tenure-track faculty position (12 months per year) as the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Meat Science/Muscle Biology.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Animal Science, Meat Science, Muscle Biology, or a closely related field with a focus on red meat species. Preference will be given to candidates with post-doctoral experience who can demonstrate clear potential for excellence in research and teaching.

The successful candidate is expected to secure research funding and lead an innovative, dynamic, collaborative and highly-respected research program that may include fundamental muscle biology/meat science, molecular and(or) cellular aspects of muscle/adipose tissue development, and pre- or post-harvest technologies that impact fresh meat quality and the conversion of muscle to meat. The successful candidate is expected to work with leading scientists in related disciplines at the University of Guelph, in Animal Biosciences, Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, Food Science, Plant Agriculture, and the Ontario Veterinary College to examine relationships of genetics, nutrition, management, animal health and welfare, and other factors to growth and(or) meat/product quality.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant, innovative and diverse faculty team in Animal Biosciences and have access to a recently remodeled Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regulated abattoir/processing facility along with sensory evaluation facilities. The University of Guelph has research stations involved in dairy, beef, swine, sheep, poultry, and fish production along with strong relationships with federally and provincially regulated meat and poultry processors. The successful candidate is expected to develop strong working relationships with industry at provincial and national levels.

The successful candidate will have a strong and active research track record, evident by high-quality, peer-reviewed publications. The candidate should show potential for pursuing research funding, both individually and collaboratively and to engage in research that complements, and collaborates with, other faculty members in the department, college, and across the University. The individual will also be involved in teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level and in supervision of graduate students.

The Department of Animal Biosciences (ABSC) is a research-intensive department with successful programs for graduate and undergraduate students. The disciplines in ABSC include: nutrition, physiology, behaviour and welfare, breeding, genetics and genomics, growth and development, and meat science. As part of the Ontario Agricultural College, ABSC has a long history of achievements in serving the agriculture and agri-food industries within Ontario and beyond.
