New Football Coach Named

February 17, 2006 - News Release

The University of Guelph has named Kyle Walters, an assistant coach and a Guelph graduate, as its new head football coach.

“Kyle brings a great deal of leadership and enthusiasm to our program,” said athletics director Tom Kendall. “He also knows how to win and, most important, he is respected by the players on the Gryphon team. Coach Walters has an in-depth knowledge of the University and the tradition of Gryphon football. He understands what excellence is and knows what it takes to achieve it.”

Walters has served as Guelph’s full-time assistant football coach for the past two years. During that time, he helped the Gryphons rise from ninth position to fifth place and qualify for post-season play in both 2004 and 2005. In 2003, he was the assistant special team’s coach of the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

A 1997 B.Sc. graduate, Walters was a member of the Gryphon football team from 1992 to 1996. In his rookie season, the Gryphons captured the Yates Cup, and in 1996, he captained the Yates Cup Championship team. He was also a two-time Ontario University Athletics All-Star and an All-Canadian.

In the 1996 draft, Walters was second-round pick of the Hamilton Tiger Cats (10th overall) and played safety and halfback in the 1997 and 1998 Grey Cup.

Originally from St. Thomas, he lives in Guelph with his wife, Rena.
