Poster Honours Police Horse, Benefits OVC Memorial Fund

May 02, 2006 - News Release

Equine Guelph and the mounted unit of Toronto Police Service have created a poster honouring Brigadier, a police horse that died in the line of duty in February.

Proceeds from poster sales will support the Brigadier Memorial Fund, which the police service and Ontario Veterinary College created after the horse’s death. The fund will support clinical care for horses at OVC’s Large Animal Clinic.

Brigadier died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver Feb. 24. After being euthanized because of the severity of his injuries, the horse was transported to Guelph for an autopsy. Toronto Police Service created the fund to acknowledge the support it received from OVC and Guelph’s Animal Health Laboratory.

“We are deeply touched and honoured to accept gifts in memory of Brigadier,” said OVC dean Elizabeth Stone. “There is nothing quite like the bond between rider and horse.”
