Profs To Be Featured On CBC Radio, CH-TV

May 14, 2006 - In the News

U of G integrative biology professor John Klironomos will be featured live on the CBC Radio program Ontario Morning Tuesday at around 7:30 a.m. Ontario Morning, hosted by Avril Benoît, is the wake-up show for listeners in Southern Ontario outside of Toronto. In Guelph, it can be heard via the Internet.

In addition, physics Prof. Diane Nalini de Kerckhove will appear on the CH-Television program Smith n' Hayes live at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. The home, health and entertainment program hosted by Connie Smith and Matt Hayes can be seen in Guelph on Channel 10.

Klironomos will be discussing his latest research on the weed garlic mustard, which grows abundantly in Canada and the United States and is jeopardizing native trees by engaging in "chemical warfare." The weed releases chemicals under the soil that are detrimental to the fungi that some trees depend on for growth and survival. Stories about the research have appeared in newspapers and on radio programs throughout Canada, including the Globe and Mail and the CBC Radio programs As It Happens and Ontario Today on Monday.

de Kerckhove, who is also a jazz singer/songwriter, will be talking about her latest album, Songs of Sweet Fire, which is a collection of 15 of Shakespeare's sonnets and songs set to original jazz, funk and blues music. She will premiere the works at U of G May 25, with the concert serving as a kick-off event for Guelph’s Shakespeare — Made in Canada festival. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in War Memorial Hall and will feature Nalini and the Montreal band that accompanied her on the album.
