Display to Highlight Student Ideas for Civic Square

March 30, 2007 - News Release

What should Guelph’s new civic square look like? A public display this week by University of Guelph landscape architecture students will give Guelph residents a look at more than 50 designs for the city’s premier civic space.

The student display will take place April 2 to 5 at the Old Quebec Street Mall in downtown Guelph during normal store hours.

During the past five weeks, students in a first-year studio design course analyzed the planned multi-purpose site adjacent to the Civic Administration Centre — now under construction on Carden Street — and developed their designs.

Designs include plans and sketches for potential uses and forms for the area in front of City Hall and the new civic administration building.

“The public is encouraged to visit the displays and make comments that will be forwarded to the city for consideration during their deliberations on the development of the site,” said Prof. Maurice Nelischer, director of the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development.

Last week, city officials held the first open house to obtain citizen comment about the project.
