U of G Participates in Ontario Universities Fair/Career Fair at RIM Park

September 24, 2007 - Campus Bulletin

The University of Guelph and the University of Guelph-Humber will take part in the Ontario Universities’ Fair from September 28 – 30th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The event is expected to attract over 80,000 prospective students and their families.

The Fair is the largest off-campus recruitment event of the year. It gives prospective students and their families the opportunity to visit displays, attend presentations, collect handbooks, and have their questions answered by representatives from all 20 Ontario universities.

Staff from Admission Services and Student Service areas from both the University of Guelph and the University of Guelph-Humber will be on-hand during the Fair to answer questions. Faculty, staff and students from both campuses will also share their expertise and detailed knowledge.

Fair visitors are primarily senior high school students and their families, and teachers and guidance counsellors from the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.

The Ontario Universities’ Fair is being held in the South Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre during the following dates and times:

Friday September 28th: 9:00am-6:00pm (NEW)
Saturday September 29th: 10:00am-5:00pm
Sunday September 30th: 10:00am-5:00pm

U of G is also taking part in the 14th annual Career Fair Sept. 26 at RIM Park in Waterloo where close to 300 employers and some 3,000 students and recent graduates of the region's four post secondary institutions will meet to talk about careers and employment opportunities.

The event is the largest post secondary career fair of its kind in Canada. It’s co-sponsored by the University of Guelph, Conestoga College, the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.

"It's a hot job market out there," says Carol Ann Olheiser, Waterloo's graduating student and alumni employment co-ordinator. "Our employer registrations have increased by 20 per cent over last year's fair, which clearly attests to the quality of our students and alumni and the academic programs at the four local post-secondary institutions."

Students and alumni will have the opportunity to meet with some 300 employers and gather vital information on careers. They can network with representatives of participating organizations, discuss employment requirements and opportunities, as well as promote their own skills.

The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is open to students and alumni from the four post-secondary institutions. A shuttle bus service will run from U of G to the event. Buses will leave from the front of the University Centre every half hour from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will return to Guelph from RIM Park every 30 minutes starting at 11:30 a.m., with the last bus leaving Waterloo at 4 p.m.

Many economic sectors will be represented at the fair, including financial services, advanced manufacturing, information technology, retail services, engineering, aerospace, telecommunications, health care, pharmaceuticals, food and hospitality services, law enforcement, community and social services, and government agencies and departments.

The participating employers include Canadian Pacific, Alberta Municipal Affairs and Housing, Bell World, Apotex Pharmachem Inc., The Pepsi Bottling Group, Transport Canada, Waterloo Regional Police Service, Wolseley Canada, Redback Networks Inc., RBC Financial Group, McCain Foods (Canada), Sears Canada, Manitoba Hydro, VistaPrint, Molson Canada, Cargill Ltd. and Shell Canada Ltd.

Admission is free with a student/alumni card from any one of the four participating institutions.
