July 07, 2008 - Campus Bulletin

Three OAC graduate students have received top honours from the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society.

Richard Vyn was awarded the Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award, which is presented every three years. Vyn's research looked at the effects of strict agricultural zoning on farmland values. He was supervised by Profs. Brady Deaton and Karl Meilke, Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics.

In addition, Kate Tsiplova and Predrag Rajsic tied for the Outstanding Master's Thesis Award. Tsiplova conducted an economic analysis of the effect of risk and uncertainty on commercial fishery management practices. Her advisers were Prof. Glenn Fox, Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, and Prof. Steve Crawford, Integrative Biology.

Rajsic looked at factors contributing to excessive use of nitrogen fertilizer in Ontario. He was supervised by Prof. Alfons Weersink, Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics.

This is the first time U of G students have swept both categories in the same year.
