Wrestlers Win Big at OUA Championships

Two U of G wrestlers captured gold medals at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships held at Brock University this past weekend. Seven other Gryphon wrestlers won silver and bronze medals.

Allison Leslie, a second-year human kinetics student, won the 72 kg weight class and was undefeated at the tournament. Jenni Kaija, a second-year marine biology student, and Ashley Routliffe, a first-year bachelor of arts student, won silver medals in the 51 kg and 67 kg divisions respectively. Stephanie Devries, a third-year physical sciences student, won a bronze medal in the 82 kg.

On the men's side, Kyle Grant, a fourth-year economics student, won the gold medal in the 130 kg division. Fourth-year biological sciences student Nic Gavel and Rookie Kevin Iwasa-Madge, a first-year nutrition student, won silver medals in the 68 and 61 kg events respectively. Mac Fillman, a first-year criminal justice student, and Nic Zoblocki, a second-year philosophy major, earned bronze medals in the 65 and 76kg events.

The Gryphons women's wrestling team placed fourth overall and the men's team placed third.

Leslie and Grant's gold-medal performances earned them First Team All-Starts status and the silver medalists are Second Team All-Stars. All of the medal winners qualify for the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) championships Feb. 27 to 28 in Calgary.
