Gryphons Win OAU Rowing Gold

October 26, 2009 - Campus Bulletin

The Guelph Gryphons won their first rowing gold in 30 years at the Ontario University Athletics rowing championships on Saturday.

Kerith Gordon and Nicole Gough placed first in the women's lightweight doubles on the rough waters of the Royal Canadian Henley Course in St. Catharines.

The duo led the race for the entire 2,000-metre distance but was pressured hard by second-place Brock University, who pulled within striking distance several times during the race. Gordon, Gough and the rest of the Gryphons will compete next week at the Canadian championships in Montreal, where they will face perennial powerhouses including the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia.

The Guelph women placed fifth overall in the OUA, while the men’s team finished eighth, best-ever rankings for U of G rowers.

In addition to team success on the water, the Gryphons coaching staff were also in the spotlight at the OAU Coaching Awards. David Leger was unanimously voted Novice Men’s Coach of the Year.
