Students to Vote on Referendum

April 02, 2010 - Campus Bulletin

University of Guelph undergraduate students will vote this week on whether to remain members of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), Canada's largest student lobby group. U of G students pay $7.27 a semester, contributing some $230,000 annually to CFS in fees.

The referendum will be held April 7 to 9, with voting taking place online (graduate students are not part of this referendum process). Students will receive an email next week before the election date directing them to a secure voting website. Voting will be facilitated by the University secretariat’s office.

The referendum was proposed early last fall by a U of G student who submitted a petition to CFS asking for the right to hold a referendum on campus. As per CFS bylaws, it was signed by more than 10 per cent of the undergraduate student population. In late fall, Guelph’s Central Student Association started legal proceedings to ensure that U of G students would be allowed to vote on the issue, and it recently won the right to hold a referendum.

Referendum rules requires that 20 per cent of students participate in the vote and that the question be approved by a simple majority.

Information on the referendum is available online, and students are encouraged to inform themselves of the issues and participate.
