U of G to Turn Off Lights for 'Earth Hour'

March 25, 2011 - Campus Bulletin

Some campus lighting will be reduced or shut off Saturday night to mark Earth Hour weekend.

An international energy-conservation initiative run by the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour encourages people to turn off their lights for one hour at 8:30 p.m. to support action on climate change.

The Department of Athletics will reduce lighting in gyms, pools and the main Athletics Centre building. Hospitality Services will reduce lighting in residence cafeterias.

"The University of Guelph has a long-standing commitment to reducing our energy impact," says Gillian Maurice, U of G's sustainability co-ordinator. "Earth Hour is just one of the many initiatives on campus that can show how many individuals acting together really do make a difference."

Members of the U of G community are encouraged to turn off lights in common areas and washrooms when they leave campus on Friday and to remember to mark Earth Hour at home Saturday.

“In addition to saving energy, spending an hour without power with families and friends is a great way to reconnect socially,” says Paul Wartman, student organizer of Sustainability Week, which concludes this weekend.
