U of G Hosts Talk by Economist

April 14, 2011 - News Release

Economist Marie Claire Villeval will discuss “From Freakonomics to Neuroeconomics: The Role of Incentives” at the University of Guelph April 19.

Hosted by the College of Management and Economics, her talk will take place in Room 300 of the Macdonald Institute at 3 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

“Prof. Villeval is an outstanding researcher in the developing area of behavioural economics,” said U of G economics professor Francis Tapon, who helped organize the event. “Her visit to the University of Guelph will attract attention to this new field.”

Villeval is an economics professor at the National Centre for Scientific Research, the largest fundamental research organization in Europe and run by France’s Ministry of Research. She is director of the Groupe d’analyse et de théorie économique research institute at the University of Lyon, president of the French Economic Association and founding president of the French Association of Experimental Economics. She is also associate editor of the Journal of Public Economic Theory and the Journal of Economic Behaviour and Organization.

Villeval studies experimental economics, behavioural economics, neuroeconomics, personnel economics and public economics. She has looked at incentives and motivation, teamwork and leadership, punishment and co-operation, status-seeking and ego utility, self-image and tax evasion.

Remaining at Guelph until April 24, she will meet with U of G researchers and give a departmental lecture to faculty and graduate students, said Tapon.

“She will be meeting with researchers from economics, psychology and even biomedical sciences to talk about her latest work and about ideas investigated by Guelph researchers at the intersection of these three fields.”
