U of G Sets United Way Goal at $525,000

September 23, 2011 - Campus Bulletin

Rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the University of Guelph’s United Way volunteers as they kicked off the University’s annual fundraising campaign today with a barbecue on Branion Plaza. Their goal: $525,000.

President Alastair Summerlee introduced Marva Wisdom, chair of the Guelph and Wellington United Way campaign for 2011, and said the University’s workplace campaign is one way that faculty, staff, retirees and students demonstrate their level of caring for the greater Guelph community.

“Last year we raised more than $550,000 to provide funding for local programs in Guelph and Wellington County; I know the University community will continue this tradition of generosity,” said Summerlee.

The University’s United Way campaign runs until Dec. 5 under the leadership of Prof. Al Sullivan, Department of Plant Agriculture, and Genevieve Gundy, secretariat officer and information and privacy co-ordinator. The student co-chairs are undergraduate Vanessa Young and graduate student Gavin Armstrong. They are supported by a team of 150 volunteers who serve as United Way canvassers, committee members and event organizers.
