December 05, 2011 - In the News

University of Guelph student Abid Virani is making headlines for a film intended to inform young people about HIV/AIDS in Africa and to show them how they can make a difference.

Virani’s documentary Start With Us premiered in Toronto this past weekend to mark World AIDS Day. He was featured on CTV's national news and in an article in the Guelph Mercury.

The documentary follows 12 Ontario youths, most with Guelph connections, on a humanitarian expedition to Lesotho, South Africa, which has one of the world's highest rates of HIV/AIDS . It explores the AIDS epidemic through the stories of the region’s youth.

Virani, a fourth-year international development student, directed the film. He is the co-founder and chief executive officer of the charitable organization I Have Hope In the Fight Against AIDS, which is the successor organization to a humanitarian group begun by Virani and classmates while in high school.
