Gryphon Athletes Cap Successful Weekend

It was a medal-filled weekend for University of Guelph athletes, with Gryphons capturing top spots in track and field, swimming and wrestling during national and provincial championships.
U of G swimmers won three gold medals at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships in Montreal.
The women’s team was led by Alisha Harricharan, who won gold in the 50m butterfly and was named a CIS first team All-Canadian. She also won bronze in the 100m butterfly.
On the men’s side, Wil Wright won silver in the 100m butterrly and Matthew Stephenson won bronze in the 200m breaststroke.
The Gryphon women finished 10th overall and the men, 11th.
Gryphon wrestlers won seven medals at CIS championships in Thunder Bay, Ont. Gold went to Allison Leslie in the 67kg division and Madison Parks, 51kg division. Parks was also chosen female rookie of the year, and both women were named CIS first team All-Canadians. Kelsey Gsell won bronze in the 82kg weight class.
One the men’s side, silver medals went to John Fitzgerald (130kg), Jake Jagas (82kg) and Mathieu Deschatelets (82kg). All three were named CIS second team All-Canadians. Kevin Iwasa-Madge won bronze (68kg).
Overall, the men placed sixth and the women, fourth.
In track and field, Gryphons reached the podium 19 times during the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships in Toronto. Guelph earned eight gold, two silver and nine bronze medals.
Overall, the women’s team placed third and the men, fourth.
Tim Hendry set a new OUA record in the shot put with a gold-winning throw of 17.68m. Other Gryphon medals:

Jeannette Goode, 60m (7.67); Julia Wallace, high jump, triple jump; Brent Roubos, shot put, 16.74m; Tommy Lecours, 600m (1:20.27); Nadine Frost, 1,000m (2:51.01) and 1,500m (4:32.47); and the men’s 4x800m relay team (7:40.20) and women’s 4x200m relay team (1:42.94)
