Mock Student Residences to Go Up in Flames Wednesday

September 04, 2012 - Campus Bulletin

University of Guelph fire prevention officers will be putting on a “live burn” demonstration Wednesday at 4 p.m. on Johnston Green. The exercise involves University fire prevention officers building two mock student residence rooms on Johnston Green, complete with discarded furniture from University residences, and setting them on fire.

The purpose is to show students how fast their residence rooms can go up in flames, how quickly fire can spread, and how much time they have to get out, says Pat Martin, manager of Campus Community Police.

In one of the mock rooms, the door will be propped open to demonstrate how open doors enable flames to spread more quickly and cause more damage.
