Website Domains

A domain name (often simply called a domain) is an easy-to-remember name that's associated with a physical IP address on the Internet. It's the unique name that appears after the @ sign in email addresses, and after www. in web addresses. Source

The University of Guelph's domain is "uoguelph.ca".

Domains

The standard format for U of G entity domains and U of G personal domains are as follows:

  • Entity*: "www.uoguelph.ca/department"
  • Personal: "www.uoguelph.ca/~centralLoginID"

Subdomains

Requests for subdomains in the form "www.XYZ.uoguelph.ca" or "XYZ.uoguelph.ca" are also accepted, provided these rules are followed:

  • "XYZ" clearly and unambiguously designates a unique University of Guelph entity*.
    Example: McLaughlin Library is "www.lib.uoguelph.ca"
  • The entity* designated must be a logical sub-unit of the University of Guelph, NOT a service that multiple entities* provide.
Example: "publications.uoguelph.ca" is not accepted as many U of G entities can have publications.

Before requesting a new subdomain, know that:

  • A subdomain is a prefix added to a domain name to separate a section of the U of G website.
  • Site owners primarily use subdomains to manage extensive sections that require their own content hierarchy, such as online stores, blogs, job boards or support platforms.
  • Subdomains function as a separate website from its domain, and therefore do NOT have the SEO ranking of the main website.
