Course Instructor | Labour Management Relations

Teaching Opportunity

The School of Continuing Studies (SCS) is recruiting an instructor with a passion for teaching, academic knowledge, and industry experience to facilitate Labour Management Relations, one of nine online synchronous courses offered in the Diploma in Human Resources Management program.

Position Description

We are seeking an instructor to develop and facilitate the Labour Management Relations course during the Summer 2026 semester (April 14 to June 23).

The course environment is hosted on the University of Guelph online learning management system (D2L Brightspace) to support communication and access to learning materials. Instructional sessions and student engagement are facilitated live over ten (10) weeks using MS Teams. Live classes are scheduled to run on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 PM, with the first class on April 14, 2026.

As an SCS instructor, you support student learning, develop course content including resources, learning activities, and assessments, and provide meaningful student feedback in alignment with provided learning outcomes.

Description

This course focuses on the critical components of industrial relations from both the union and management perspectives, how the parties develop their strategic plans, and the approaches the parties take to effectively execute their plans.

This course is well suited for those working towards a University of Guelph Diploma in Human Resources Management, Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation, and people working in or who wish to work in human resources or payroll. This course also meets the requirements for the Canadian Certified Administrative Professional (CCAP) designation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify the reasons for the evolution of the labour movement in Canada, interpret related legislation, and use an Industrial Relations Systems Model to identify the inputs, actors, activities, and outputs
  • Identify the impact of economic theories, social conditions, trade agreements, and political issues on labour-management relations
  • Understand how unions are formed and operated
  • Recognize the role and responsibilities of a human resources function in labour-management relations
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the collective bargaining conversion process to determine the appropriate sub-process to use in collective bargaining
  • Define bargaining objectives and translate them into specific bargaining strategies and plans
  • Participate in the collective bargaining process, and demonstrate the ability to monitor and adjust action plans to achieve the collective bargaining objectives
  • Explain the role and layout of a collective agreement: clauses, schedules, terminology, processes, and wording interpretations
  • Determine the impacts and ongoing role of labour-management relations, specifically on human resources practices in both the private and public sectors

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities as course instructor include:

  • Developing a course structure including all curricular and assessment elements
  • Preparing a course outline, and assessment structure with rubrics as per the standards and requirements of the department
  • Developing and updating learning activitiesincluding quizzes, exercises, case studies, and discussion activities that reinforce learning, in consultation with SCS staff
  • Working collaboratively with SCS staff according to established timelines
  • Responding to SCS staff in a timely manner (24-48 hours) to support course administration
  • Selecting, preparing and identifying course content including but not limited to: reading lists, materials list, slides, visuals, and activities in alignment with course learning outcomes
  • Facilitating the course online based on a set schedule
  • Creating a supportive and engaging online community that fosters student learning
  • Sharing real-world experiences and providing examples that demonstrate your expertise in the topic area and meet the needs of the learners
  • Utilizing the online learning management system as part of course facilitation
  • Responding to and supporting students in a timely manner (24-48 hours)
  • Participating in meetings, orientations and training, as requested to support course administration and instructor orientation
  • Grading all assessments following the rubric/grading criteria and providing appropriate feedback on submitted work
  • Providing student feedback in a timely manner throughout the semester with final grades being completed no later than 10 days after the course end date
  • Participating in re-reading or re-grading assessments, attending appeals, and participating in cases of academic misconduct, which may occur after the end date of the course, as required
  • Sustaining a practice of file management and compliance with University of Guelph policies and procedures to maintain a safe, engaging and supportive learning and working environment

Qualifications and Requirements

The following qualifications are required for this position:

  • A university degree from an accredited institution with expertise in the subject area; HRPA designation is considered an asset.
  • A minimum of five years’ work experience in human resources, labour-management relations and training in a diverse range of organizations and contexts.
  • Exceptional written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with students in class and online
  • Experience in developing course curriculum, training or facilitating
  • Teaching experience an online synchronous learning environment—you show a dedication to teaching and learning, and are committed to quality teaching, delivering courses and student support
  • Excellent ability to manage projects and due dates, and meet timelines
  • Excellent ability to balance competing priorities
  • Strong computer technology skills and the ability to learn new software, and computer systems
  • Excellent management skills in MS Teams, MS PowerPoint, and MS Word; previous experience utilizing the D2L Brightspace platform or other learning management software is an asset.
  • Access to the internet and computer technology to participate in live synchronous delivery and the course online learning management system

Instructor Fee: Variable $3,000 - $3,750 CA (determined based on qualifications, base instructor compensation + size of student cohort). More details will be provided during interviews.
