Escarpment Laboratories And The Hub.
The Escarpment Laboratories team is living proof that you can turn what you're passionate about into a business (and a successful one at that) - and in their case, what they love, is craft beer.
Brewing their own craft beer and working in a wine yeast research lab led Richard Preiss and Angus Ross - both graduate students at the University of Guelph to found Escarpment Labs, a business dedicated to growing fresh, high-quality liquid yeast for craft and home brewers. Richard and Angus were joined shortly thereafter by Nate Ferguson, an instructor from Niagara College’s Brewmaster program.
Escarpment Laboratories started out working out of Wellington Brewery in Guelph, Ontario and is currently growing and expanding into their own operation. They’ve partnered with craft brewers across the province from Royal City Brewery in Guelph to Stone City Ales in Kingston and have a growing clientele across the country.
Escarpment Laboratories is the first business of its kind in Canada, dedicated to local and fresh liquid yeast strains (brewers previously had to look to the United States or even Europe for yeast – often finding far more expensive and far less fresh products). They also offer microbiology quality control, customized strains and product development, strain banking and isolation as well as strains for homebrewers.
Richard and Angus successfully pitched for Hub mentors and joined the Hub Incubator program in Winter 2015 and credit the Hub, it’s mentors, dedicated workshops and funding for helping three people with science backgrounds, grow their network and their business to what it is today. They have since received additional funding from Gryphon's Laair as well as Startup Royale Guelph.
