About
Ella Rose Brown (they/she/he) is a queer settler whose previous education in Gender Sexuality and Women’s Studies led them to the SOPR program. Ella holds an HBA and MA in Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies from the University of Western Ontario. Ella chose the SOPR program because of the attention given to intersectional feminism and decolonization. The Re•Vision Centre for Art and Social Justice located on the University of Guelph’s campus was an additional draw for the autodidactic artist and curator.
Ella’s research interests focus on social change through art gallery curation, and how curatorial choices can influence interpretation and impact. Their MA research was an evocative auto ethnographic project that involved curating an art exhibit that reworked non-activist art to be a critique of generative AI. The exhibit was on display in the D.B. Weldon Library for a two-week period. Ella’s PhD research is interested in how art and artifacts with difficult or problematic histories can be displayed to promote social justice education and action.
