About the Dean

Uwafiokun Idemudia became Dean of the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences in January 2023.

After completing a BSc in biological sciences from the University of Ilorin in Nigeria, Uwa continued his studies in England and France, earning an MA in diplomatic studies and international affairs at the University of Westminster and a PhD in geography from Lancaster University. Prior to being appointed dean, Uwa served as the chair of the Department of Social Science in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at York University and was a faculty member in the International Development Studies and African Studies programs.

Uwa's research is interdisciplinary and spans a wide range of cultures and places, with an interest in the political economy/ecology of natural resources extraction, business and sustainable development, the cultural politics of development and Black geographies. His work has been published in highly-ranked journals and has contributed to shaping governmental policies in Africa.

Today, Uwa oversees CSAHS, one of the colleges with the largest student populations at U of G with more than 200 faculty and staff, 5,000 undergraduate students and 350 graduate students. He looks forward to working with students, staff and faculty to build on the college's achievements and to prioritize improving the students' experience; advancing equity, diversity, inclusion and indigeneity; and supporting research and teaching excellence.
