2021 Epilepsy Request for Proposals

Description

The mission of the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is to advance the health of all dogs and their owners by funding sound scientific research and supporting the dissemination of health information to prevent, treat and cure canine disease. CHF supports a One Health model as a critical tool to achieving this vision, with a multidisciplinary approach to addressing the health needs of all dogs and their people.

Epilepsy is among the most common neurological disorders in dogs. This request is for research proposals that provide dog owners and the veterinary community with improved methods for understanding, preventing, and treating epilepsy in dogs.  Proposals may include approaches to better diagnosis, characterization, pathophysiology, the molecular and genetic bases of canine epilepsy, as well as novel therapeutics.

Proposals may address any of the following topics but are not limited to the study of epilepsy in dogs:

  • Pathophysiology of canine epilepsy with a focus on:
    • Prevention
    • Early diagnosis
  • Genetics and epigenetics; use of multi-omics technology
  • Novel diagnostics and therapeutics, including but not limited to:
    • Anti-epileptic drugs and non-drug therapies for refractory epilepsy
    • Overcoming the blood-brain barrier to deliver potentially novel anti‐seizure agents such as RNA, gene, antibody, or cell therapy
    • Nutrition
    • Deep nerve or vagal nerve stimulation
  • Effect of therapeutic agents on performance in performance dogs
  • Identification and validation of biomarkers to better define therapeutic response
  • Discovery of methods to image brain chemistry and function during seizures to better classify and understand phenotypes
  • Development of systems that anticipate epileptic seizures +/- deliver therapy to alter seizure severity
