Influence of Microbiome on Canine Health & Disease Request for Proposals


The mission of the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is to advance the health of all dogs and their owners by funding sound scientific research and supporting the dissemination of health information to prevent, treat and cure canine disease. CHF supports a One Health model as a critical tool to achieving this vision, with a multidisciplinary approach to addressing the health needs of all dogs and their people. While CHF supports a One Health approach, proposed research outcomes must benefit dogs.

The Foundation is focused on funding innovative research with an emphasis on the influence of the microbiome on canine health and disease through several of its Research Program Areas.

Canine microbiota are composed of a complex collection of microbial communities living in and on the canine body. The Foundation is interested in conditions related to dermatological, reproductive (uterine and vaginal), oral cavity, ear canal, respiratory and gastrointestinal microbiomes. Proposals may aim to improve current understanding of the microbiome, microbiota function and microenvironment modulation, leading to advances in new diagnostics, therapeutic options and contributions to health (or disease).

Proposals accepted through this RFP include the following CHF research program areas: Dental Disease or Otitis (General Canine Health), Dermatology & Allergic Disease, Gastrointestinal Disease, Lung & Respiratory Disease and Reproductive Conditions. Proposals that fall under a research program area other than the aforementioned areas will not be accepted for scientific review at this time. Collaborative studies are encouraged.

Proposal topics may emphasize the canine microbiota influence as it pertains to genetics, mechanisms of disease, multi-“omic” approaches, pathology and molecular basis of disease, epidemiology and environmental factors and clinical application of research findings. Applications addressing microbiome diversity, role in host metabolism, its influence on physiological functions, nutrition, life stage health and immunity, and the human-dog connection of microbial communities, including personal microbial signatures are encouraged. 

Maximum Project Value

Both Acorn (up to $20,000 including 8% maximum indirect costs) and Oak (over $20,000 including 8% maximum indirect costs) grant proposals that can be completed within the budget will be accepted for review. On average, CHF studies are $50,000 and two years in length.
