The purpose of the Canadian Stroke Consortium-Brain Canada-Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada 2022 Stroke Clinical Research Catalyst Grants program is to increase capacity for clinical stroke research within Canada. The primary aim is to provide seed funding to develop new lines of research and generate preliminary data that would support successful applications to larger grants from granting agencies, while broadening the researcher’s clinical research program. Projects which fall under the scope of this funding opportunity aim at reducing the burden of stroke through clinical research geared towards improving our understanding of stroke and advancing stroke care with the ultimate goal of preventing stroke recurrence and improving patient outcomes. The project's primary focus should be the brain and it should contribute to improved care along the continuum of stroke including acute care, secondary prevention, rehabilitation, and recovery. Successful projects will be those that demonstrate value to the research and clinical community. The Canadian Stroke Consortium, Brain Canada, and Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada recognize that early-career investigators are at a unique position to formulate innovative and impactful research projects but funding and resources to obtain preliminary data required to apply for larger grants are often scarce. Given this, early-career investigators who are within seven years of their first academic appointment are strongly encouraged to apply. 

Eligibility

• Investigators must be affiliated with and conducting research at an eligible Canadian institution for the entire duration of the grant. Academic appointments must have started by the Full Application submission deadline. The Principal Investigator must be considered an independent researcher at their institution. Such an individual normally holds the rank of assistant or associate professor; can initiate and direct their own independent lines of research as principal investigator; has full responsibility for running their laboratories; has full control of their research funds; and is permitted to supervise trainees (if applicable, as per their institution’s policy). Postdoctoral fellows or adjunct faculty are not eligible to apply.
• Research projects with established seed funding of greater than $75,000 are not eligible. Research projects with established seed funding of less than $75,000 are only eligible if a budgetary shortfall is demonstrated in the budget of the present application, with appropriate accompanying justification. It is the responsibility of the applicant to notify Canadian Stroke Consortium immediately should substantial overlap arise from new funding awarded during the application and review process of this competition.
• Research work must be conducted at a Canadian institution.
• Applicants must submit a Registration Form to be eligible to submit a Full Application.
• Applicants must be able to initiate the project in December 2022, when funding will start.
• The project’s population should consist entirely of patients with acute stroke, transient ischemic attack or established stroke.

Note: An individual researcher can only submit one application as Nominal Principal Applicant. 

In addition to the above, early-career investigators applying to this program must:

• Be within seven years of their first academic appointment by the deadline to submit Full Applications. Leaves of absence (e.g., maternity and parental leave, sick leave, etc.) will not be included in calculating the seven-year window.
• Early-career investigators are required to designate a mentor at the time of submission for the Full Application. An individual can serve as a mentor on multiple applications.
• Members of the Canadian Stroke Consortium may be available for mentorship upon request by early-career investigators without established mentorship. 

Funding Availability

The 2022 Stroke Clinical Research Catalyst Grants program has a total funding envelope of $1,000,000 and will support up to ten grants of $100,000 each over two years. A minimum of four grants are intended for early-career investigators; this number is subject to change based on the proportion of applications received from early-career investigators and their scientific merit as determined by peer review.

How to Apply

Registration Forms, Project Summaries, and the Nominal Principal Applicant’s Canadian Common CV (CIHR Biosketch template) are to be submitted via email to Karen Earl by 16:00 EDT on May 31st, 2022. Submission of a Registration Form is a requirement to submit a Full Application. Upon confirmation of receipt and eligibility, the Canadian Stroke Consortium will invite applicants to then submit a Full Application by 16:00 EDT on August 5th, 2022 (see UofG internal deadline above), through the provision of a Full Application Form. There will be no appeal for late submissions. Receipt of the Registration Form and the Full Application will be acknowledged by the Canadian Stroke Consortium within two working days.

If you need to meet a deadline set by the lead institution for this opportunity, please ensure that you provide the Office of Research with at least five days in advance of the lead institution’s deadline to review the application, or your proposed component of the project. Please be in touch with the Office of Research (contact information below) ahead of the deadline if it looks like it will be difficult for you to submit all the required documentation on time (i.e. budget, proposal, OR-5 Form).
