CIHR News Regarding Extension to Authority to Use Funds

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

Mid-pandemic, CIHR extended the standard terms by 1 year.  CIHR has announced that here will be no further blanket extensions to active grants but NPIs can apply directly to CIHR for an extension; the agency is generally receptive to rational requests.

Extension to the Authority to Use Funds (AFF):

CIHR is providing an extension to the authority-to-use funds date for any active grant at the request of a researcher. These requests will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, and will give researchers additional time to use any residual funds to compensate for disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A request for an extension can be submitted to the CIHR Contact Centre at with a short justification to support their request. While CIHR does recommend that applicants work through their respective institutions, the extension to the authority-to-use funds can come directly from the grantee and does not need to go through the Research Granting Officers (RGOs).

Special Notes

Please note that research activities carried out in the context of COVID-19 need to adhere to the University of Guelph COVID-19 research principles, policies, guidelines and processes as they may be updated from time to time and communicated on the Office of Research web-page.
