Description

The “Global Energy” international energy prize is awarded for outstanding scientific research and scientific-technical developments in the field of energy which promote greater efficiency and environmental security for energy sources on Earth in the interests of all. The “Global Energy” prize stimulates the development of energy in terms of science and underscores the importance of international cooperation and state and private investment in the sectors of energy supply, energy saving and energy security on the planet.

In accordance with data from the IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence, the “Global Energy“ prize figures in the “Top 99” most prestigious and significant international awards. Since 2003, 42 researchers have become the Global Energy Prize laureates representing 15 countries: Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, Ukraine, and the USA.

Eligibility

The Prize is awarded annually. The elected number of laureates ranges from two or three.

Nomination submissions of the following categories are accepted for consideration:

  • Electric power engineering;
  • Exploration, extraction, transportation and processing of fuel and power resources;
  • Renewable energy sources;
  • Bioenergy;
  • Fuel cells and hydrogen energy;
  • Heat power engineering;
  • Nuclear power engineering;
  • New materials used in energy;
  • Energy efficiency;
  • Efficient energy storage;
  • Energy transportation;
  • Management in energy sector.

Citizens of any state can become a laureate of the Prize.

Candidates for the Prize can be nominated by the nominators. These are scientists and/or organizations acting via their representatives who have been verified on the organizer’s website and received confirmation of their nominating status, as well as persons specially invited by the organizer to the nomination pool.

The Prize is not awarded:

  • To the same person for the same achievement twice;
  • To the members of the International Award Committee and to former members of the International Award Committee during the first two years after their resignation therefrom;
  • Posthumously.

Additionally, persons performing solely administrative and/or organizational functions cannot be nominated.
Self-nomination for the Prize is not allowed. The nominator can file up to three nomination submissions in the course of one nomination process.

Prize

The award package of the prize includes a gold medal, a gold badge, diploma, and US $500,000.

  3. Send the completed Expression of Interest document and a CV to research.honours@uoguelph.ca and copy your College Research Manager. 

Career interruptions due to parental leave, family care, extended illness, or community responsibilities will not negatively impact the committee’s assessment of a candidate’s research productivity. These will be taken into consideration when EOIs are assessed.

How to Apply

The Vice-President (Research) encourages nominations for this prestigious award, and will serve as nominator for those nominees recommended by the Honours and Awards Advisory Committee. If you wish to nominate a colleague or to be considered for VPR nomination:

  1. We recommend discussing your interest in this award with your College Research Manager and Associate Dean (Research).
  2. Complete the Expression of Interest document
  3. Send the completed Expression of Interest document and a CV to research.honours@uoguelph.ca and copy your College Research Manager by the internal deadline.

As this is an international prize, the University may engage the Global Excellence Initiative to coordinate external review of nominations.
