The Great Lakes Fishery Commission
Description
Each year, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission honors individuals or groups who have made outstanding contributions to Great Lakes science, policy, and management. The Commission is now accepting nominations for three annual awards:
- The Applegate Award to recognize an individual or group furthering the cause of sea lamprey control on the Great Lakes.
- The Besadny Award to recognize an individual or group exemplifying extraordinary commitment to building strong and lasting partnerships in Great Lakes resource management.
- The Christie/Loftus Award to recognize an individual or group making significant scientific contributions toward understanding Great Lakes ecosystems and the fisheries they support.
Eligibility
Anyone can nominate a person or group for an award.
Nominations for the Vern Applegate award should be based on the following criteria:
- Any person or group who has displayed exemplary dedication to the sea lamprey control program, including: overcoming unusual obstacles, making innovative discoveries through research, the transfer of science to management, greatly advancing the commission's mission, or realizing significant program efficiencies.
Nominations for the Buzz Besadny award should be based on the following criteria:
- Any person or group who has displayed exemplary commitment to building or strengthening partnerships: (1) under A Joint Strategic Plan for Management of Great Lakes Fisheries, (2) with non-traditional stakeholders (i.e., stakeholders with whom an individual or agency did not previously interact), (3) that promoted efficiencies in resource management through partnerships, or (4) advanced practical application of science in resource management through partnerships.
Nominations for the Christie/ Loftus award should consider the criteria that follow:
- Any person or group who has made distinguished scientific contributions to the health of Great Lakes ecosystems, including: research that has advanced understanding Great Lakes ecosystems, fish communities, and fisheries. The research contributions should relate to the rehabilitation of fish communities, the conservation of biological diversity, the protection of the physical environment, enhancement of science-based fishery management, the transfer of science to management, or understanding the effects of sea lampreys on fish populations.
Those eligible to receive the awards are any person or group whose performance matched the purpose and criteria of the award (as expressed above). Recipients may include (but are not limited to) an employee of the GLFC’s contract agents, a cooperator of the GLFC, commissioners, and secretariat.

Prize
Recipients will be honoured publicly during the commission’s annual meeting and will be presented with an engraved plaque. Each recipient will also have their name engraved on a permanent plaque to be displayed at the secretariat.
