Due to the unprecedented financial challenges caused by a decreased ability to fundraise during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the uncertain future Heart & Stroke may not be in a position to offer/fund any awards from this competition.
In response to this uncertainty, the Grant-in-Aid (GIA) application in CIRCUlink will include the standard mandatory questions required for completion, as well as two OPTIONAL questions for those who wish to be considered for one-year (only) funding at $60,000.
This one year only option is offered in the event funds raised are only sufficient for one year awards at $60,000. In summary, Heart & Stroke is offering this competition for those who choose to apply understanding that no awards (one year or multi-year) may be offered.
- Applicants choosing to apply to the one year award must first fully complete the GIA application and meet all criteria found in the 2021/22 GIA Submissions Guidelines (e.g., eligibility).
- Applications failing to adhere to the guidelines WILL be deemed unacceptable and WILL be removed from the competition. There will be no appeal of this removal.

The GIA program provides operating funds to support important, pertinent, novel research in the areas of heart disease and stroke. GIA funding promotes research discovery, exploration and innovation across all health research themes. Knowledge gained from scientific findings contributes to the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health of Canadians through prevention, treatment and recovery.
Research is supported across the four health research themes:
- Basic biomedical
- Health services/systems
- Social, cultural, environmental and population health.
Principal Investigators (and Co-PIs) must have a full-time academic or faculty appointment (i.e., at minimum, at the Assistant or Clinical Assistant Professor level) in Canada at the time the application is submitted. The date of first faculty appointment will be based on the date listed in the Common CV (i.e., under Employment). Please ensure your Common CV is updated and correctly identifies a valid appointment. Applicants holding lecturer/clinical scholar of similar university appointments that are of lower tier than Assistant Professor appointments are not eligible to apply as principal applicants.
For any application with a PI and co-PI, should the PI be deemed ineligible – the entire application will be withdrawn from the competition. There will be no appeal process for applications deemed ineligible.
Adjunct applicants at an academic institution must submit a letter from their dean/chair/division director to clarify their specific appointment, i.e., amount of protected time available, local infrastructure in place.

Please note that research activities carried out in the context of COVID-19 need to adhere to the University of Guelph COVID-19 research principles, policies, guidelines and processes as they may be updated from time to time and communicated on the Office of Research web-page.
If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.
Applicant to complete application and submit to sponsor using online Heart & Stroke’s online system, CIRCUlink.
Heart & Stroke will accept a scanned copy of the original signature uploaded into CIRCUlink; electronic signatures will also be accepted. Applicants need not send an original copy of the signature page to Heart & Stroke. (Note: The expectation is that an electronic signature will hold the same weight as an original (wet) signature).
Due to conflict of interest, letters of support from Heart & Stroke are not permitted as part of any application to any Heart & Stroke research competitions.
Information For Co-applicants
If you need to meet a deadline set by the lead institution for this opportunity, please ensure that you provide the Office of Research with at least five days in advance of the lead institution’s deadline to review the application, or your proposed component of the project. Please be in touch with the Office of Research (contact information below) ahead of the deadline if it looks like it will be difficult for you to submit all the required documentation on time (i.e. budget, proposal, OR-5 Form).
