OPC Contributions Program

Description

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) has issued a call for proposals under its 2020-2021 Contributions Program, which funds independent privacy research and related knowledge translation initiatives.

OPC is inviting research and knowledge translation applications that advance its strategic privacy priorities. As in past years, the OPC is interested in funding innovative initiatives that seek to better understand and address issues related to their priorities. This year, the OPC is particularly interested in funding on or more research projects on artificial intelligence and its repercussions on privacy rights. The OPC is also interested in funding the organization of new "Pathways to Privacy" symposium.

All proposals must address issues that fall within the scope of the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), which sets ground rules for how organizations may collect, use or disclose information about individuals in the course of commercial activities. Proposals must also touch on at least one of the OPC’s strategic privacy priorities. When developing project proposals, applicants are strongly encouraged to review projects currently underway and completed projects from previous years in order to build on past or ongoing work.

If you are interested in generating new ideas, approaches and knowledge about privacy that will help organizations or individuals make informed decisions about protecting personal information, please visit the OPC website to learn more about the Contributions Program or go to the 2020-2021 Contributions Program Applicant's Guide to find out more information on project requirements and how to apply.

Eligibility

Only not-for-profit organizations – including consumer, voluntary and advocacy organizations, educational institutions, and industry & trade associations – are eligible for funding.

Maximum Project Value

The budget for the OPC's Contributions Program is $500,000 annually, all of which will be made available under the present call.

OPC will award up to $50,000 to any single project and a maximum of $100,000 per recipient organization. In addition, OPC is reserving $50,000 out of this year’s budget for proposals related to the organization of a “Pathways to Privacy” symposium.

Project Duration

The OPC Contributions Program is structured to fund projects that are initiated and completed within a single fiscal year (April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021), although some exceptions may be made for multi-year projects that can demonstrate why the project requires more time to complete.
