Description

Shastri Research Student Fellowships (SRSF) provide an opportunity for a transformative cultural and educational experience. Scholars will get exposure in an international setting, which will bring lifelong benefits to the individual trainees as well as to the institutions in which they would be affiliated. The training and exposure they will receive will also broaden their understanding of research techniques, principles, and interdisciplinary approaches, and thus will expand their scholarly horizons, a necessary step in becoming a more confident researcher in any corner of the world. Such an experience will also provide invaluable insights into the nature of the bi-national academic community and may often result in lifelong friendships and a broad bi-national professional network. 

Eligibility

1.Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Doctoral Students will be awarded to students enrolled in doctoral programs in India/Canada with a significant focus on India/Canada. The fellowship is intended to enable them to access relevant research material as well as conduct research in India/Canada, which will subsequently help them to obtain their degree. For the duration of the fellowship, the students must be affiliated with a Canadian/Indian institution. The selected applicant or awardee is encouraged to confirm his / her travel by  March 31, 2017, or at least initiate the process on or before this date. 

Eligibility

  • Doctoral students must be registered/admitted for full-time PhD in an Indian/Canadian university.
  • Applicant’s synopsis should have been approved by competent authority before the last date of submission of application with SICI.
  • The applicant’s university/institution must be from member institutions of SICI. See the list of SICI member institutions.
  • Doctoral fellow should obtain notice of ‘No Objection’ from his/her Institution before applying.
  • Applicants should provide two reference letters of which one of the letters must be from their thesis supervisor/head of department.
  • The applicant should request his/her supervisor to declare in the reference letter that his/her thesis has been approved and also indicate the stage of research.
  • The applicant must be a citizen or a permanent resident of India/Canada.

2.Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Post-Doctoral Students will be awarded to scholars from India and Canada who have been awarded a Ph.D. degree and wish to pursue further research in India/Canada. Applicants need not have an academic position. The applicants are required to apply for this fellowship within five years of being awarded the Ph.D. degree. The selected applicant or awardee is encouraged to confirm his / her travel by March 31, 2017, or at least initiate the process on or before this date. 

Eligibility

  • The applicant must have a doctoral degree awarded by Indian or Canadian University/ institution.
  • The applicant’s university/Institution must be from member institutions of SICI. See the list of SICI member institutions.
  • The tenure of post-doctoral fellowships is contingent upon the completion of all doctoral requirements and applications must be made within five years of receiving a doctoral degree.
  • Proof of Ph.D. completion need to be submitted along with the application form.
  • The applicant should demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English, and should preferably be in the age group of 30 to 45 years.
  • In case the applicant is employed then Employer’s endorsement is must for application submission and has to submit a notice of ‘No Objection’ from head of the department/Institution with the application.
  • The applicant must be a citizen or a permanent resident of India and Canada.

3.Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Post-Doctoral Students will be awarded to Indian and Canadian students who have completed two years of degree (that is, Bachelor, Masters or M. Phil programme) at recognized Indian & Canadian universities or institutions of higher education to take up or to pursue a course (module/part of a course), or do an internship at recognized Canadian and Indian universities. The selected applicant or awardee is encouraged to confirm his / her travel by 31st March 2017 or at least initiate the process on or before the aforementioned date.

Eligibility:

  • An applicant should have completed two years of Bachelor degree and minimum of one year or two semester of Masters from an Indian or Canadian University/ Institution with at least 55% marks.
  • Students pursuing M. Phil should have completed minimum of one semester of the degree/course.
  • The applicant’s University/Institution must be from member institutions of Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. See the list of SICI member institutions.
  • The applicant should not have another degree from a Canadian university or be enrolled in a Canadian degree program.
  • The applicant must be a citizen or a permanent resident of India/Canada.
  • Official Transcripts (student applicants only) to be sent directly from the university for all years of completed study.
  • The applicant should demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English, and should preferably be in the age group of 21 to 25 years. 

Funding Availability

Number of available fellowships:

  • 10 doctoral student awards
  • 8 post-doctoral student awards
  • 12 student awards

Indirect Costs

Institutional overhead costs are not eligible.

Project Duration

  • doctoral student award: $590/week for up to 6 months
  • post-doctoral student award: $590/week for up to 4 months
  • student award: $500/week for up to 8- to 12 weeks
