The Volvo Environment Prize Foundation
Since the first award in 1990 the Volvo Environment Prize has become one of the scientific world’s most respected environmental prizes. The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded for outstanding innovations or scientific discoveries, which in broad terms fall within the environmental field. Laureates represent all fields of environmental and sustainability studies and initiatives.
The span of disciplines and activities for which nominations can be made is wide and includes all disciplines which have relevance to the environment. The research of nominees should be based on scientific grounds but must clearly show impacts outside of the specific discipline. Please note that self-nominations are not accepted.
This annual prize consists of a hand-crafted diploma, a glass sculpture, and a cash award for SEK 1.5 million (approximately EUR 150,000, USD 160,000, or CDN 219,000).
Please note that research activities carried out in the context of COVID-19 need to adhere to the University of Guelph COVID-19 research principles, policies, guidelines and processes as they may be updated from time to time and communicated on the Office of Research web-page.
If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.
If your nomination will be submitted by a nominator other than the VPR, please submit directly to the sponsor by the external deadline. Please also submit a copy of the full nomination and OR-5 to firstname.lastname@example.org by the external deadline.
How to Apply
Detailed nomination instructions are available on the Volvo Environment Prize nomination guidelines. Guidelines include:
- A short letter of motivation
- A detailed description of the research the nominee has conducted and how it adds to our knowledge around environmental science. Main achievements and their importance should be emphasized. Emphasis must also be placed on the impacts of the research outside of the particular discipline e.g. impacts on policy development, impacts on sustainability and/or contribution to changed behaviour.
The Vice-President (Research) encourages nominations for this prestigious award, and will serve as nominator for those nominees recommended by the Research Honours and Awards Advisory Committee. If you wish to nominate a colleague or to be considered for VPR nomination, please submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to email@example.com by the internal deadline.
An Expression of Interest will include:
- A draft letter (two-three pages) addressed to the VPR, signed by your ADR, which outlines how you/your nominee meets the criteria outlined on the Volvo Environment Prize website.
- An up-to-date CV for nominee (and each member of the team, if applicable)
As this is an international prize, the University may engage the Global Excellence Initiative to coordinate external review of nominations.
If your nomination will be submitted by a different nominee, and therefore does not require the Vice-President's endorsement, please submit a full nomination and OR-5 to firstname.lastname@example.org by the external deadline.
