Friends of RIO

The Research Innovation Office (RIO) at the University of Guelph (U of G) is building a team of experts to become Friends of RIO.

This is a volunteer-based program without any financial commitment. As a Friend of RIO, you gain an insider’s view of the University’s innovation pipeline and contribute to commercialization efforts for technologies, ideas, and entrepreneurs with the potential for real-world impact. The program has multiple levels of engagement options to fit your capacity.

By sharing your expertise, you help strengthen the quality, relevance and reach of U of G's innovation efforts.

Opportunities to Contribute

Friends of RIO play a role in advancing innovation at U of G. Here are a few reasons we may contact a member, depending on their interest and preferred level of engagement

Help Shape RIO Programs, Initiatives and Events

Your feedback or contribution can impact the design and delivery of commercialization initiatives and events, ensuring they are relevant and responsive.

Advise on Intellectual Property and Market Strategy

We may invite you to weigh in on the market potential and competitive positioning of new intellectual property (inventions and technologies) to improve commercialization outcomes.

Support Entrepreneurs

You may be matched with early-stage ventures or entrepreneurial minded researchers or students who are seeking guidance on strategy, sector insights or entrepreneurial experience.

Membership Levels

Advocates provide general advice, participate in events and offer feedback across a range of RIO initiatives. Advocates may be asked to:

  • Provide high-level feedback on innovation-related programming
  • Participate in panels or events as a speaker or attendee
  • Offer perspective on emerging trends across sectors
  • Share input on new or evolving RIO initiatives

In addition to "Advocate" opportunities, Experts contribute specialized insight and strategic guidance based on their professional expertise, with engagement varying depending on RIOs current priorities and activities. This level is suited for individuals with specialized industry-specific that are happy to share. Experts may be asked to:

  • Provide insight related to strategy and technology direction (non-confidential)
  • Meet with RIO staff to share trends and opportunities within their sector
  • Provide warm introductions to key contacts in their networks
  • Offer support to U of G entrepreneurs and students
