About the Human Rights & Equity Office

The University established the Human Rights and Equity Office in 1996 to coordinate its initiatives in the areas of discrimination and harassment and employment equity. The Office also supports the Office of the Provost in the area of educational equity.

Under the University's human rights policy, the Office is responsible for:

  • assisting those with supervisory responsibilities in the resolution of human rights concerns;
  • helping those who are involved in human rights dispute or complaint resolution procedures to acquire the assistance and support of trained personnel;
  • managing the fact-finding process for formal complaints in a consistent, timely and fair manner.

The Office is also responsible for:

  • coordinating the University's employment equity initiatives and monitoring compliance with the requirements of the Federal Contractors Program;
  • bringing to the attention of those in positions of authority any University policies, procedures and practices that appear to discriminate against individuals or groups, based on prohibited grounds;
  • providing training and awareness on human rights and equity issues to all members of the University community.
