College of Arts Awards Ceremony
The University of Guelph's College of Arts is proud to host its awards ceremony on Friday, June 12th, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Arts Research Centre (ARC). The event, dedicated to recognizing the exceptional achievements of undergraduate students in the College of Arts, will bring together University student award recipients, award donors, faculty, staff, and other members of the University community. A range of prestigious awards spanning many disciplines within the College of Arts will be presented to students by College of Arts faculty members. The event program and a full listing of awards and recipients can be found below.
Dean's Message
Welcome to this semester's celebration of outstanding achievements of College of Arts students. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the dedication and love of learning that underlies the teaching and learning activities in which we engage. We are most grateful to donors for establishing awards and for their continued support. Their ongoing participation in the University of Guelph’s educational mission is most appreciated and helps us to celebrate student achievements to the greatest extent we can.

Serving Scholar Prize

Provided by Mrs. Mary Walsh and Dr. John Walsh established the Serving Scholar Prize to recognize the academic excellence and achievement of a graduating University of Guelph student currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) including the CAF Reserves. The award is also supported by donors, Jane Hawkes and Catherine Littlejohn. Awarded to graduating students registered in the Serving Scholars program with the highest cumulative average.

Department of History
D.C. Masters Prize in History

Priscilla and Stanford Reid Trust Prize

Established by the Priscilla and Standord Reid Trust Fund in honour of the first chair of the History Department, Stanford Reid, and his wife Priscilla Reid to acknowledge the best paper written about the history of Presbyterianism and/or the Reformed tradition.
Ruth and Eber Pollard Prize in Canadian History
Award Winner:
- Eden Ridpath
Established by the Guelph Historical Society and supported by Ruth and Eber Pollard in recognition of Ruth and Eber Pollard's contribution as President and Treasurer, respectively, of the Society during the years 1972 to 1993. Awarded to a history major who has completed a 3000- or 4000- level history course that includes Canadian history and written an essay focused on Canadian history.
W.S. Reid Undergraduate Thesis Prize

In honour of W.S. Reid, Professor Emeritus. Awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled in the honours History program who submits the best paper for courses HIST*4470/HIST*4970 Special History Project Seminar I and II on a non-Canadian topic.

Crowley/Jackman Gold Prize in History

Established by Dr. Terence Crowley, former chair of the Department of History, and his partner Terry Jackman, a Guelph lawyer. Awarded to a student graduating from the BA degree program with a major in History.
Department of History Graduate Essay Prize

Alan Gordon Scholarship in Canadian and Public History
Award Winner:
- Matthew Edwards
Established in honour of Alan Gordon, esteemed Professor and colleague in the Department of History from 2003 to 2022. Alan was passionate about both teaching and research, notably in the areas of Canadian and public history. He was an ardent supporter of graduate students, and keenly aware of the financial challenges they faced while completing their degrees. Selection is based on academic performance and exceptional research.
Elizabeth Ewen Scottish Studies Prize

Elizabeth Ewan’s friends, family, colleagues, and former students established this award in honour of her longstanding contribution to the University and to Scottish Studies upon her retirement. Selection will be based on the highest grade in HIST*4040 or when this course is not offered, the highest standing in HIST*4470 and HIST*4970 in an academic year.
Kenneth B. Morrison Memorial Scottish Studies Travel Grant

The family of Ken Morrison has created this award in memory of their late brother, who was Manager of the University Bookstore for over 20 years, as well as a University of Guelph alumni with a Bachelor of Arts in History. This travel grant fulfills Ken's wish to support Scottish Studies students by helping make the opportunity to travel to Scotland to enhance their research and life experiences more affordable. Awarded to students registered in any Masters or Doctoral program offered by the College of Arts who are pursuing travel to Scotland for the purposes of Scottish-related research.
Duncan Campbell Memorial Travel Grant

Established by the friends and family of Duncan Campbell in recognition of his tireless dedication to the study of Scottish history and the Scottish diaspora, and to honour his deep commitment, over many years, to supporting students in Scottish Studies at the University of Guelph. Awarded to students registered in any Masters or Doctoral program in the Department of History who are pursuing travel to Scotland for the purposes of Scottish-related research.
St. Andrew's Society of Montreal Research Travel Grant in Scottish Studies

Established by the St Andrew's Society of Montreal. Awarded to full-time students studying in the field of Scottish Studies to undertake a research trip to Scotland.
Ted Cowan Scholarship

Prof. Cowan, for many years chair of Scottish studies in the Department of History, made major contributions to raising the awareness of Scottish studies both in the academic world and among the public as a whole. Awarded to Full-time Scottish Studies PhD students who have completed or anticipate completing their qualifying examination, and MA students who have completed two semesters.
Frank Watson Travel Scholarship

Provided by Dr. Cecily Watson and the Scottish Studies Foundation. Awarded to a full-time student in the Scottish Studies Program who intends to travel to Scotland for their thesis work.
Alexander H. Brodie Memorial Award

Provided by friends of the late professor Alexander H. Brodie. Awarded to a full-time graduate MA (or, if none are eligible, PhD) student for thesis research overseas related to Scottish studies.
St. Andrew's Society of Toronto Travel Grant

Established by the St. Andrews Society of Toronto. Awarded by Full-time students studying in the field of Scottish Studies who are planning to travel for research purposes related to their program of study.
Department of Philosophy
Jakob Amstutz Prize

Established by the Guelph Philosophical Society, in memory of Jakob Amstutz, a valued faculty member of the Philosophy department for more than twenty years. Awarded to Student with the highest cumulative average who has graduated during the previous fall or winter or will be graduating in the summer of the current academic year from the Honours Philosophy program.
Kip Hunter Prize

The Kip Hunter Prize is awarded to the best essay written by a Philosophy Major in an upper level Philosophy course. Faculty will nominate essays to the Chair of the Department of Philosophy. Selection will be based on the strongest written essay.
Robert Carr-Wiggin Prize

Established in memory of Robert Carr-Wiggin, one of the first students to graduate from the PhD program in Philosophy. Awarded to to a student in philosophy for the best paper that has been submitted to either a scholarly journal or a scholarly conference during the preceding year.

A.M. Ross Centennial Scholarship

Offered by Professor A.M. Ross. Awarded to a student with the highest standing in ten or more English courses taken during the first 6 semesters at the University of Guelph.
Kaya Firth Scholarship in English

Through the generosity of Train Trailer Rentals, this scholarship was established in honour of Kaya Firth, a fourth year English major who was devoted to her family, friends and her University newspaper – The Ontarian. Awarded to students registered in an English major within the College of Arts and Selection will be based on a passion for literary study and have a unique and creative critical voice as demonstrated by a portfolio of written work.

Sundar Singh Hilsendager Theatre Studies Scholarship

CFUW Guelph – Graduate Scholarship in Studio Art

Professor Victor J. Matthews Memorial Prize in Classics

Established in memory of Dr. Victor J. Matthews, a distinguished teacher of Classics for almost 40 years and varsity cross-country team head coach. This award is given to the student with the highest cumulative average in 4.0 credits of courses taken in Classical Studies, Greek or Latin beyond the 2000 level.
Mac Lewis Memorial Classics Travel Grant

The family of Dr. McKenzie Lewis established this award in memory of their late son, a talented teacher of Classics and respected archaeologist. This award, supported also by Mac’s colleagues and friends, is intended to continue Mac’s passion for travel and first-hand encounters with Classical Antiquity by providing students from the University of Guelph with the opportunity to travel and study. Selection will be based on academic standing and the statement indicating the relevance of the experiential learning to the student’s program. Awarded to students registered in the Classical Studies major or minor who have completed a minimum of 10.0 credits and have a minimum 75% cumulative average participating in a School of Languages and Literature experiential learning opportunity.
Joubert Satyre Memorial Graduate Prize

Established in honour of our colleague and friend, Professor Joubert Satyre, who was a faculty member in the French Studies programme in the School of Languages and Literatures. Originally from Haiti, he received his PhD from the Université de Montréal. Over his career, he was known for his great generosity, his passion for poetry and music, and for his encyclopedic knowledge of French and Francophone literature. Selection will be based on the highest cumulative average in the French courses completed in the previous fall and winter semesters.
Interdisciplinary Programs
Tersigni Family SXGN & Social Change Prize

Established by the Tersigni family to reflect their commitment to ongoing social change and support for students dedicated to building a more just and equitable society. This award celebrates a graduating SXGN student whose leadership and activism have contributed to social transformation within or beyond the university. Awarded to students graduating in June, or who graduated from the previous winter or fall convocations, from the Sexualities, Genders and Social Change major or minor, who have contributed to positive social transformation within and/or beyond the University of Guelph through community engagement, leadership, and/or social justice work on or off campus during their undergraduate degree.
Lambda Scholarship Foundation Canada in 2SLGBTQIA+ Studies

This scholarship was established to encourage research pertaining to the history, contributions, and issues by or about 2SLGBTQIA+ peoples. Lambda Scholarship Foundation Canada in 2SLGBTQIA+ Studies

This scholarship was established to encourage the study of subject matter relating to the history, contributions, and issues faced by or about 2SLGBTQIA+ peoples.Students registered full-time in any program with an essay, assignment, or other coursework pertaining to Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, (2SLGBTQIA+) and additional people who identify as part of sexual and gender diverse communities. Preference will be given to an applicant who is involved in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community as demonstrated by a record of volunteer activities, active civil society memberships, or as attested by a letter of recommendation from a community group, or as evidenced by related academic pursuits. Preference will also be given to students registered in the Sexualities, Genders and Social Change program.
