This course is a survey of French history from the beginning of modernization in the 18^th century to the challenges of the late 20^th century. Topics will include the Revolution, the Napoleonic period, social and political transformation in the 19^th century, the Great War, the defeat of 1940 and Vichy, and the remarkable changes in French life since the Second World War.
